Icon and Scripture reflection

At our October gathering, we read and reflected on the Parable of the Sower and the icon of the parable. What do you see in the icon and how does the scripture speak to you?

The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

Prayer

A Prayer to the Theotokos and the Saints

Below is special prayer to the Theotokos and the saints that you can pray at home as part of your family prayer time. The first stanza of the prayer might sound familiar because you'll hear it chanted by the priest whenever there is an Artoclasia service.  The last stanza is actually the oldest known prayer to the Theotokos and dated as early as the 2nd century!

Rejoice O Virgin,
Theotokos Mary Full of Grace
The Lord is with thee
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb
For thou hast born the savior of our souls

O baptizer of Christ,
remember us all
that we may be delivered from our iniquities
for to thee has been given grace to intercede for us all

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

Intercede for us
holy apostles and all the saints
that we may be delivered from perils and sorrows
for we have acquired you as fervent intercessors before the Savior

Both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Beneath thy compassion,
we take refuge, O Theotokos
despise not our prayers in our necessity
but deliver us from harm,
only pure, only blessed one.

Play the video below to hear and learn how its chanted. We also sing this entire prayer during Great Lent.

Hymns of the Divine Liturgy

Learn the hymns of the Divine Liturgy as chanted in our parish on Sundays.

This month, we learned the first special hymn to the Theotokos that we sing during Divine Liturgy: "Through the intercession of the Theotokos, Savior save us."  Play track #4 below to hear how it is chanted at our church during the Divine Liturgy. Learn it as a family and sing it with us next Sunday!

Children's song

Little Children

You may recall the icon of Christ and the little children that we reflected on at our September gathering. Here's a lovely song by Presvytera Gigi Shadid that is related to that icon. Play the video above to learn it and sing it together. See lyrics below.

Unless you become like little children
you will by no means enter
the kingdom of heaven

Be like a child not childish
live unto Christ not as you wish
we've got to convert
we've got to repent
it's time to hold on
to the message he sent

Take up your cross
and follow me
my arms outstretched
upon a tree
we've got to repent
it's time to hold on
to the message he sent

Unless you become like little children
you will by no means enter
the kingdom of heaven

Be like a child not childish
live unto Christ not as you wish
we've got to convert
we've got to repent
it's time to hold on
to the message he sent

Take up your cross
and follow me
my arms outstretched
upon a tree
we've got to repent
it's time to hold on
to the message he sent

Unless you become like little children
you will by no means enter
the kingdom of heaven
